Lokta handmade paper is hand crafted in Nepal, using traditional methods, from natural fibres, vegetable dyes, herbs and flowers.
Traditionally, lokta paper is made from the bark of the lokta plant, also known as the Daphne shrub, which grows in the Himalayan forests of Nepal. The bark is sustainably harvested allowing it to regrow. After harvesting, the bark is boiled to soften the fibres and then pounded into a pulp. This pulp is mixed with water and spread on a wooden frame in a water bath. The water is then drained leaving a smooth thin layer of pulp, that is peeled from the frame once dried naturally in the sun, to become lokta paper.
Lokta paper is known for its strength and natural insect resistance, making it ideal for official documents, journals, and traditional Buddhist texts. This eco-friendly production process, rooted in sustainable practices, not only preserves traditional Nepali craftsmanship but also supports rural economies and aligns with global efforts towards sustainable production.
