Lokta Paper

Nepalese handmade lokta paper is a traditional, eco-friendly paper crafted from the bark of the Daphne shrub, locally known as lokta. This plant grows abundantly in the Himalayan forests at altitudes of 2,000 to 3,000 meters, regenerating naturally after harvesting, making the paper sustainable and environmentally friendly. The tradition of making lokta paper dates back over a thousand years, with its earliest use traced to ancient religious texts and legal documents due to its durability, resistance to pests, and long-lasting quality.

The process begins with harvesting lokta bark, which is then boiled, cleaned, and beaten into a fibrous pulp. This pulp is spread evenly over wooden frames submerged in water, dried under the sun, and finally crafted into sheets of textured paper. Lokta paper is often dyed naturally and decorated with intricate hand-painted designs or embedded with pressed flowers.

Historically, this paper was used by Nepalese royalty and Buddhist monks for sacred manuscripts and official decrees. Today, lokta paper is globally cherished for its beauty and versatility, used in journals, lampshades, gift wrapping, and art. Its enduring tradition showcases Nepal's rich cultural heritage and commitment to sustainability.
