The Lord Surya “The Sun God “

Lord Surya, revered as the Sun God in Hinduism, holds a central place in the pantheon of deities. He symbolizes light, energy, and life, sustaining all existence on Earth. Known as the giver of health, vitality, and enlightenment, Surya is one of the few Vedic deities still worshipped in modern times, signifying his timeless relevance.

In Hindu mythology, Lord Surya is depicted as a radiant figure riding a golden chariot drawn by seven horses, which represent the seven colours of light or the seven days of the week. His charioteer, Aruna, embodies the dawn, heralding the arrival of the Sun each day. Surya is also one of the Navagrahas, or nine celestial influences, worshipped in Hindu astrology, playing a crucial role in shaping human destinies.

The Rigveda, one of the oldest sacred texts, extols Surya’s glory as the illuminator of the world and a dispeller of darkness. He is addressed by various names, including Aditya, Bhanu, Ravi, and Savitr, each highlighting different aspects of his divine persona. Surya is also considered the father of several significant figures in Hindu lore, including Karna of the Mahabharata and Sugriva from the Ramayana.

The practice of Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) in yoga is a form of devotional offering to Lord Surya, integrating physical movements, breath control, and prayer. Additionally, festivals like Makar Sankranti, Chhath Puja, and Ratha Saptami are dedicated to Surya, celebrating his life-sustaining energy and his journey across the heavens.

Devotees often chant the Aditya Hridayam Stotra, a hymn dedicated to Surya, seeking his blessings for courage, health, and prosperity. Lord Surya's worship transcends religion, symbolising the universal importance of the Sun in nurturing life and guiding human endeavours. His radiant presence reminds us of the light within and the eternal cycle of renewal and hope.
